It is a simple matter of connected to the vehicle and if you cannot see all the modules, then Pin #7 & #8 will need to be connected. The issue with the BMW Scanner 1.4.0/PA Soft interfaces is most are Asian knock off/clones and some may have Pin #7 and #8 connected, but many DO NOT. The handheld BMW specific tool likely has both Pin #7 and Pin #8 supported so not further action or soldering is required for this type of tool. So no further action or soldering is required for these. So the ELM327 adapters use Pin #7 and most Apps that connect via ELM327 interfaces are generic OBDII Apps that primarily connect to the DME. People are correct and many of the BMW Scanner 1.4.0/PA Soft knock off/clone interfaces do in fact require some pins connected because of poor design/quality control. This is not an issue on newer CANBus vehicles, only on older models. Generic OBDII/EOBD typically communicate via Pin #7 for ISO 9141-2 on the E46 which will allow connection to the DME and EGS, all other modules in the E46 are connected to the K-line which is Pin #8.
